The IMC syllabus has been
developed in accordance with Air Operators and Pilots Association (AOPA)
together with the Civil Aviation Authority who regulate flight training
in the UK. The IMC course is unique to the UK and is not valid outside
UK airspace and although limiting in that respect has invaluable use in
the UK due to the weather conditions prevalent especially during winter.
IMC students should consider this course as safety training allowing the
pilot to cope with IMC conditions which arise unexpectedly. Further on
as experience is gained use of the reduced landing and take off
conditions together with navigation solely reliant on radio aids will
increase the flying days available during the year.
Course Requirements
- Hold a valid PPL and medical
- Have a minimum of 25 Hours since date
of application for the PPL
- 10 hrs must be as pilot-in-command
- 5 hrs must be on cross country flight
- The 15 hrs dual IMC course can be
included.
- Therefore minimum requirements are 10
hrs PIC of which 5 hrs are cross country.
- Minimum of 4 hrs dual instruction in
instrument flying (normally achieved during the PPL course)
Rating Privileges
- Fly out of sight of the surface
- Fly in a control zone on a special
clearance with flight visibility greater than 3 km (PPL must be
greater than 10 Km)
- Takeoff and land where the flight
visibility is greater than 1800m (PPL must be greater than 3km)
- Fly in Class D and E airspace which
require compliance with Instrument Flight Rules
Ground Examinations. 75% pass
- IMC
Flight experience
- 15 hours total flight time comprising
at least:
- 10 hours dual instruction with sole
reference to instruments
- 5 hours dual instruction
- Applicant with a Night rating may be
exempt from 3 hours
- Flight Test
Revalidation
- The IMC Rating is valid for a period
of 25 months from the date of the successful flight test
- A flight with an examiner is required
for revalidation
